What is dysarthria?
Speech is an essential communication tool, contributing enormously to the quality of life. Dysarthria is caused by damage to the central nervous system or to the neuro-muscular apparatus with impairment of the articulators of the vocal tract (supraglottic), larynx, and muscles of the respiratory system. This condition affects approximately 1.7% of the population.
Dysarthria can be either congenital or acquired. It can occur at birth, as in cerebral palsy (CP), muscular dystrophy, or later in life as neurological disorders, including stroke, traumatic brain injury, cerebral tumors, Parkinson’s Disease (PD), Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Guillain-Barre syndrome, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Myasthenia gravis (MG), or Huntingon's disease.
How do dysarthric patients communicate with others?
Typical approach to alleviate the problems caused by dysarthria is speech rehabilitation with the assistance of a speech-language-pathologist and usage of different types of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). However, dysarthria encapsulates all neuro-motor articulatory disorders that result in acoustically unintelligible speech, often accompanied by other physical handicaps, limiting the ability of individuals to interact with computers and the environment. These patients would greatly benefit from speech conversion and automatic speech recognition applications.
